In the Shadow of the Banyan – Cambodia

in-the-shadow-of-the-banyanHeartbreaking but informative, historical fiction novel about Cambodia in the 70’s when the Khmer Rouge came into power.  The story is told through the eyes of a young girl whose family is privileged and lives in Phnom Penh until the Khmer Rouge forces them out of the city.  What follows is one tragic event after another- family members separated from one another, adults and children forced into labor camps, father taken by the Khmer Rouge and likely executed just for being educated and privileged, daughter/ sister dies amongst other tragic events.  During the Khmer Rouge’s reign from 1975 to 1979,  it is estimated that 1.7 million Cambodians or roughly 25 percent of the population died.  This was a tough read and somewhat slow going for me due to the ongoing tragedies.  Nonetheless, it was interesting especially prior to visiting Cambodia.
